I'm struggling on these:-
1Down - "Alleged line-up breaking down" (4)
12 Down - "Fish a Taiwanese director cut" (5)
15 Down - "Girl perhaps leaving gloom behind" (3)
19 Across - "Girl having fun, but badly paid" (7) ---N---
22 Across - "Star playing against type ensuring drama ends"
(4) (could this be NOVA?)
20 Down - "Now skipper's back aboard, on deck" (5)
21 Down - "A key for Rene and Sam, perhaps" (5)

The 3-lettered "girl" answer finishes where the 7-lettered "girl" answer starts, by the way.

1 I've seen this answered as Said, alleged . Sad = Down and the I is from 'line up'.


15 Have seen this answered as Meg - but no-one could parse it.

Thanks for people's help so far. I have decided that 21 Down is UNCLE. making a key in French "un cle" , which is odd, because I always thought that it was "un clef"!

19 Across is "GAINFUL" ("Gail" with an anag. of "fun" inside)
That makes "MEG" seem likely for 15 Down, Malone, but like yourself, I'm scratching my head and wondering why!

E.g. Perhaps / maybe/for example?

Putting "MEG" in makes 15 Across, the clue for which is "Pieces written by a disheartened Athenian" , look like being "MENTION", but I haven't seen why on that one yet.
And the end letter of this confirms 16 Down ("Love - mostly from the South") as being "NIL", but I don't see all of that one either!
