Thanks everyone for entering and having a go at a word which I felt might be quite tricky to clue. Welcome back peterm, dorrien and ixion!

There were lots of clever devices used; subtractive anagrams, hidden word clues, cryptic definitions and various other types of wordplay. But in the end it came down to a difficult choice between two acrostic clues - stevea @ 23 and peterm @ 15

Nice one, PeterM! I'm really glad that you've won, not just because your clue deserved it, but also because I feel you unfairly lost out in the Peer Review I set earlier in the month. Your clue was my personal favourite so, had FJ's vote for you gone through, you would have been amongst the front runners and would have got the casting vote.
