The singular makes for a more accurate clue.
I had "axes" in my head, at first, thinking of a service tree!

No, I did see it, and agree that it makes a better clue. I was pointing out that it does just about work with the plural too.

I was getting nowhere with that clue and was impressed with your answer,Rusty.
It always looks a bit churlish to correct things in clues - but sometimes, as here, it does make a difference.
