Helveticus, I think the 'was' is because 'ne' an old word - Chambers says it's 'obsolete'.

Just finishing this off, I have one word to get and it's 15d, I have C?T? clue is Tomtom perhaps just for show. (4) Presume some of you have solved this one!
The theme was quite fun but like other people earlier in the thread I'd have preferred chitchat to the actual more obscure word that is the real
answer.
i's like to know which of the four 8-letter words the setter thinks is two words?

Cats - the show, musical. It's from Tom+Tom - ie cats, plural.
