A bit more difficult than recent weeks but made much easier once you spot the theme. Thematic word is a new one to me.

Well done grid. Justifiable pride.

I'm slightly better than half-complete. A couple of the clues are making no sense to me whatsoever.

Is 5d the French word for "whistle"? I would have no idea why, except that I have the first letter and there is a theme-fitting answer lol.

I seem to need to know more and more Scottish gaelic and slang for this crossword...

laertes - your right on 5D - check out the two middle letters as an abbreviation - should lead you to word play

Thank you crates, that helps me too. I have enjoyed this one but am stuck on my last three answers. Any help for 37a, 38d, 49a? Even with most of the letters in place I can't see how to unravel these!

catkin - 37A - synonym of menaces with L missing (1st letter) - 38D -usual abbrev for river surrounded by 'don't use'(as in unused tyre) - 49A - abbrev for old plus synonym for canon (5 letters) around 3 letter word for jazz ( US usage meaning nonsense/rubbish)
