Re 1d, I think that might be "fringe-parter"; at least that's what my wife and I call it and it fits with the letters you have. Can't see how it fits with the second half of the clue though.

Given the answer (new phrase to me - so educational!) ... I don't see why cumulonimbus is there, but ...
