I am still struggling with this one. Can someone confirm the answer to 7 across? I have two possibles 166 and 186 but neither seem to work. Many thanks.

I have filled in the grid and it all looked fine until 1a and 1d. Here my answer for 1d works if it is a square PLUS the grid entry at 1ac. Very frustrating but I don't have the heart to check back through my labyrinthine logic and spreadsheet pages. What an isolating and solitary experience. With the normal listeners my partner can join in and help. But with this, one person just has to follow the thread.

Don't give up. Same thing happened to me. I needed a small change in my playfair number and then it worked.

I thought this was great, very enjoyable.

Agreed, a beautiful ( but tricky ) little miniature.

Catkin, as per previous threads, the sum total of all 20 digits is 98.
Make sure you encipher 1ac before entry which I forgot at first.
Small clue...there is one zero in the completed grid.

Another small clue. 1ac and 1dn start with a 1.

Thanks Unclued. I breezed through quite quickly until I got to 1a and 1d and could not find a solution. That was 2 days ago.
I had for some reason convinced myself that there were no zeros in the grid. All fine now.
I guess the lesson is to read the preamble properly and to stop doing suduko.....
Very nice puzzle in the end.

Have tried several times with this but each time draw a blank...are these true:
1d ends in 0
2a has a repeated digit
the playfair code number has a 9 or an 8 in it ??

Thanks for any help
