The Captain is still eluding me....

And 11a is disturbed = ma(d) saint = s gospeller = john

The extra letters for 7 and 8 down are eluding me, and they seem pretty vital.

I have the "10" and the "2","3", "5" but am missing several letters to make up the 6,4 bit.
Also don't understand what the preamble means about the across clues giving directions etc....if someone could put it simply for me please

8d Could it be n? Ship similarly may mean use the the three letter ship from 7d.

Then the 4 letter word made by extra letters is ?IN? with one more may give the captain.

Is Captain's last name 5 letter long?

That makes it difficult.

The extra letters are 10, 6, 4, 2,3,5.

10 is the definition. 6 is the action required, 4 plus one-letter abbreviation from 5 letter word gives me 5 letters to work with.

Can you tell me where the other three are coming from?
