I thought ,'The Gate Exit' or 'The West Gate' but now don't think either is correct!

No. The second word is the county that Chaucer's pilgrims travel thru' to their destination. The whole is the name of a famous road.

"At the start" means the beginning of the pilgrims' journey, when they left London.
