I didn't give the answer in case Merryphil wanted to have another look at the clue. I sometimes rush in too soon, so was being cautious this time!

No problem, Malone's suggestion did the trick. Curiously a carrousel is a centrepiece.

On this theme, well, this crossword anyway, can some kind person tell me the answer to 1A as I'm stuck in that corner :

We must have sat outside after chilly nervous reaction (4,5)
???? ???E?T

Also has anyone got a helpful suggestion for another word for Ulcer (s in 31A)?

cold sweat= nervous reaction

cold - chilly
s we at - "sat" outside "we"

31 a another word for ulcers (plural) if one has been lying in the same position for too long :)

Bear... the ulcer's not the gastric kind, it's caused by too much lying around, literally.

Re 31A, I had put in Tyneside, having rejected Wearside but having quite forgotten that there was yet another possibility.

With any luck I'll now finish........

Just as well I checked back as I seem to have confused the issue.

I have now worked out 31A - the confusion was with the crossing clue about metropolitan counties.
