Instinctive is "seat of the pants".
Looks like an anagram of "feet as hot", and "pants" for hot?

Agreed, rusty, but it's a terrible clue. "Pants" has slang meanings , but these simply do not include "hot". And the genuine "hot pants" is not to the point

Nor, as I shd hv added, do the various meanings of "hot" include "pants", any more than those of "fast" include "cars".
