Yes folks. I think it must be Fife as the last intercepting letter is now E. Any possibility of parsing another couple?.......Simple symbol that's revered - it's used for healing purposes (9) I think it's BASILICON but don't know why. Simple is basic. An icon is a symbol. Basil + Icon or Basic + Ilion?
Cossack leader standing by a soldier (6) Is it ATAMAN? Which part of the clue relates to a soldier? If I take away ant, I'm left with ama!.... :(
At least I've learnt how to send a smiley today

'At a' could mean beside + man is soldier perhaps?

very neat, Zozozo. BASIC + LION is certainly an anagram. BUT "simple" is an old word for "herb" and Icon is a better symbol
