Neither can I Kitty - perhaps some kind soul will explain it to us

Kitty - I don't think there always is 'wordplay' as you put it - not when it's a straightforward general knowledge crossword.

Jaybee,I didn't know it was a general knowledge clue, it looks very cryptic.i didn't see any reference to good luck in the definitions that i saw.
thanks for adding a new word to my vocabulary.

Thank you all very much for your help. I did find "deasil" in the Scots dictionary, but couldn't convince myself that it was correct.Isobel.
