Thanks for the hints, but still struggling. All I can find for 8d is 'escalado' - fits my letters and anagram but not the clue! Down to last 4 but stuck in a dead end. 20 d is driving me nuts.

I think I was a little over-confident in my previous post - 12 down is a bit odd. Could someone give me the second letter as I have 'emass'(?) and something isn't right.
