1D still puzzles me puzzledpom....only way I can make sense of it is to read "sex" as "sex-", ie prefix for six.

Re 1d, I think that the clue is a little 'clunky' and verbose. You could probably drop the words "so many" and use the rest of the clue (and a little knowledge of the Romans) to get the answer. Not a great clue IMHO
