If he's going to use the technical rather than the generic term, he should get it right - stem, not root!

I thought it was ok. A root vegetable is referred to as this.

You would have been marked wrong in O level Biology, lilacwine :) Botanists are very keen on distinguishing the places that starch is stored.

I'm just about OK with calling a potato a "root vegetable" (though it isn't), but, as I said, if the precise term is used, it should be used precisely!

It's so long ago since I took O level biology (and passed with flying colours ;) ) that I don't remember if this question came up ;). As most people refer to these veg as tubers, whether correctly or incorrectly I still think the clue is ok.
