I think in this instance "away" means absent

Ya wa is "away" reversed ( ("raised" as it is a "down" clue.

I was also taking "Absent" as the definition of the answer AWAY, but thought that "voices" might indicate a homophone. Works either way.

Although the parsing can work either way, I have seen the homophone indicators "vocal" "voices" and "voiced" used several times in the RT cryptic crosswords.

absent (def) away
voices (homophone indicator) aweigh (raised)
but then I am the descendant of a long line of mariners "Anchors aweigh" me lads
