Replace the U(niversal) with a three letter word meaning 'fishy'.

Yes, I think 16a works.

I haven't parsed 27a either, or 3d, and I don't see what the final "fish" is doing in 24a - has he put it in so as to get "fish" in the clue?

You suggestion makes me think I must have the wrong answer to 27!

No, it's OK - I read the wrong type of "fishy"!

The spelling of 16a is usually with a u, no?

Also there are a couple of answers for 13d.

27a took a while but it makes sense.

Agree re. 24a... the word fish isn't really needed at the end.

Chris,

3D is a football team with a direction removed, and failing to finish...

16 the O seems to be a valid alternative.

I can't think of one satisfactory solution to 13, let alone two!

Thanks again, scorpiojo.

I see it now - rather a clumsy clue though, with two different deletions.

Mackania & chrise, how on earth do you think 24ac would work without 'fish' at the end? The def cannot be 'yellow'.

'Fish' can be slang for person - check your dictionaries - eg he was a cold fish. 'Yellow fish' is the definition.
