Aristo I think it's along the lines of
Taking the D from GHD and replacing the G from ringlets with straightening as the anagrind
Ringlets being the def.

Thanks, fiery. I did figure that ringlets was doing double duty but I don't get the 's after GHD or "for the head". I'm sure it works somehow; not enough sleep I suppose.

And yes, I figured it involved substitution.

Hi Aristo, you're correct with ringlets playing double duty.

Finally! Use GHD's for the head when straightening ringlets? (8)

Finally use GH (D)
for - substitute for
the head = (G) HD
when straightening - when making an anagram of
rin(g)lets - rin(d)lets = Tendrils
Ringlets = def

I had to use the apostrophe + s to make it read right (which I feel is common in many clues to discard the extra 's' in words with an apostrophe - let me know if it's not appropriate)

@jws - I was in Dymchurch at the weekend ... Home of Dr Syn, for those unfamiliar with his name.

A garden of twisted delights! I loved reading all of them. A few favorite touches: the lovely mattrom’s “Nurse Brooks babbled” and “Bo’s film bores” (wonderful), fiery’s “left and right hooks”, ab’s gem “decathlon”, bigbad’s emasculated chancellor (who knew?), skyewalker’s charming “dines out with starters”… and whoa, tatters! And you stumped me, les! But I’d better get on with it. I’m going with the sweet craftsmanship of ixion’s clue @21:

Articles regularly used on incline, they help climbers (8)

Thanks to all for the challenge and the fun. You folks are quite something.
