I spent a little time trying to see if SWEED was a word - in fact it is, and it's a firm that make industrial cutting machines!

I agree. Can someone tell me the parsing of 6D - 'Something in perfume has men and gentleman spinning' (5) is it a germanic mans name plural something to do with roses?

ORRIS = something in perfume

men = O.R. - other ranks in the army

gentleman spinning = 'sir' reversed = RIS
