Yes it looks like Nongs but why is that the only word of the thirteen that does not read properly when the grid is rotated ? Nonos perhaps ?

Here's my best shot at this: it's NONOS because NONOS = NO +NO (= zero or 0) +S which, not entirely, represents how bushranger Kelly died
(the NOOSE).
