Xwordfan, some of the answers simply don't fit where/how they should. Once you've got a few, you should see what's going on.

I thought you hadn't got very far as you didn't give any letters for the three clues.

There's only one place where the solution to 1 A will fit, and remember the 'unconventional way'. 15 A also helped me.
