Hi,

8d Rubbish in front of cave (6)

I know the answer is GROTTO, but could someone kindly parse it for me? I don't get the 'in front of' bit?

Is it maybe just that To comes from ('in') 'fron T O f' ?

... or, perhaps; to = before (Chambers def) & before = in front of (Ch def).
A bit vague, do you think?

Very vague Jolan ! I even wondered if 'rot' (inside gROTto ) could have anything to do with it, but it does not lead me anywhere.

I might be totally stupid here but I simply don't understand why 'TO' should be 'in front of (before)' since it comes at the end of the word - in front of what ?

If the To simply equals In front of (and therefore standing on its own) there's no need to think of it as 'before' - maybe that's just a misdirection? I can see how that works, though I'm hopeless at explaining!

I know what you mean Malone, it often happens to me;
I think this must be the explanation but I do not like this clue !

Thanks Malone and Jolan for helping out

I don't think we've resolved this one, but at least we all tried! I'll try to remember to look out for the solving blog when it appears on the Times For The Times website.
