I know I am not very good at crosswords, but can someone please explain how the number 11 is used in the answer? or is it unimportant.

Does it refer to clue 11 ?

That was a good thought Bernie but no!! it's the ninth clue and as I stated it was 14 down, many thanks anyway but it will be a mystery unresolved. (probably)

What was the answer to clue 11?

Done a bit of research. This clue was originally in the DM in April.
Clue 11a was "judge arranged a set time" - answer Estimate (anag of a set time).
So the answer Guess relates to the answer in 11 - estimate

I went with "gues(t)s" from the rest of the clue - and ignored the reference to "clue 11"!

Well Chrisg you did a "little" bit of research I don't think so, you have gone to a lot of trouble and excelled yourself, well done indeed. Many thanks to Bernie as well and if I had looked at 11 across I MIGHT (don't think so!!) have solved it myself. I can now relegate the crossword to the bin and start on my next one, I expect you will hear from me. Once again Chris fantastic work.
