I can see a tree of the genus Alnus going upwards in that column but that may not be what is wanted

I'm no further than anyone else but I was looking at the possibility of "la" meaning "look", which goes down and to either side beneath a D (the start to "dig"). But then the words "across the island" should have significance, otherwise they are redundant. As Gown seems to be an academic I thought a library might be his hoard. But all dead ends. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong (non-existent?) tree.

underneath LA is a T ... if we change this to a D look diagonal downwards both ways and we have GOLD/ DUST any good???

(a) isn't there and (b) has 8 letters instead of 7

It is at least spread beneath the only tree I have found - even if that tree is upside down!

However you have to modify the grid so I suppose that is correct even though it is very suspect

looking at EIRE = island to connect D at end of road - but haven't convinced myself
