Thanks everyone for your clues to what I thought would be a difficult answer, hence the option. I know this is said every week but a genuine phenomenal from me, well done. I'll now take some time to fine tune my shortlist.
However, I am going to take, what I imagine is, the unusual step of giving credit to a clue that hasn't made it for my further consideration but for a tweak (in my opinion which I accept is subjective) would be right up there.
ixion, through my own efforts I know how difficult it is to get an &lit attempt to read well and I hope you don't take exception and realise how long I have agonised over this. I, repeat I, feel annoying perhaps should be annoyingly for the surface but in any event I'm not sure either is really an anagrind. At length, in context, was dynamite. I hope you see this as a commendation and appreciation of your undoubtedly clue writing ability.
