Brilliant, AJH !
Of course, very non-PC. I think they only say "How" in US movies.
Can I trouble you re 22a?
Thanks again.

Hi Zardoz. 22 ac - 1 magazine = imag, and 1 ms about = ism.
And Chambers, wgich I know you don't have, says that "how" was a greeting thought to be used by Native Americans, and it's from a Sioux word.

Thanks sudokulover & AJT.
Oddly, the on-line Chambers doesn't list some of the names, but NYT Puzzle dictionary has a huge list.

The preamble to the puzzle indicates that Chambers wouldn't help. I found lists by googling, and was amazed to find so many different tribes.

Oh yes, there are loads. Ironically, the PC term here is "First Nations", as if a tribe constitutes a nation. Also, "first" is under contention:

Research on mitochondrial DNA seems to support this. See "MtDNA Haplogroup X" further down the page. Lot of political resistance to that.
