What you change is on the top line(4 letters) if I have read my ????? correctly

Not sure about the 9 letter or 10 letter highlighting though

38a ae is scottish for one - put this after str (steamer) fro another scottish word - misprint is in hElm

South Africa isn't always abbreviated to SA - use the more exotic-looking one! The misprint's at the beginning of the clue.

Stuck on the nine cells. I am fixating on the nine starting at row 2 cell 2, but do not see the connection with the individual.

You're almost there! Start one row up and one cell further along - they're doing what the quote says, what happens to the individual.
