I am guessing that you have "autocorrect" switched on. In which case, an i would show as I and people would confuse this with L.
The fourth letter is i as you asked, and the word is staircase.

I, when referring to oneself is capitalised. (might explain confusion of i and I)

We've had this problem for a long time, Bernie.
If someone has "autocorrect" switched on, it refuses to show i as lower case if typed on its own. So it shows as I (capital i)
The only way to know if the person typed capital i or lower case L is to copy and paste into google (which I just did with thomas' "I")

or thomas may have just typed a capital I which mamya took as L
