Hi again, loverman
I don't do this crossword either, but I usually look at the thread as the clues are often so quirky.

I prefer CANTOR for 18A. "Cant" can mean cut obliquely, bevelled, and the clue is

Cutting off line ..

Hi Numpty. I've got UPLAND for 4 down, which gives ?R?N. If 12 down is EARL , it's ?REN and you're just about there.

For "Designer bird" think "Hampton Court"!

I'm stuck on the last two.

31A Opt for unpractical (8) ?R?C???O

26D Tara's instrument (4) ?T??

The last letter of 26D is also the sixth letter of 31A. In case anything is wrong, I have:

29A Doughty (8) ATHLETIC
27D Bullock's bounce (4) ECHO

For those unfortunate souls who don't have access to the Wee Stinker, it's always available on line at the Press Reader site. This weeks edition is here (make sure the link doesn't wordwrap!):

Thanks aquarius. It was ATHLETIC which caused the pain.

Ouch.
