Best I can do is to change the unlit character's name to that of the main character (6 cell changes), then change the middle 3 letters of the object that links the two characters in the 'before' situation so that it reads upwards as an synonym of 'kills'. I'm not totally happy with it but is nine cell changes and it also yields the additional abbreviation.

It does look very good muraria, but I also agree that this doesn't appear to be the denouement from the sources I've read. But I'm sure you're right.

Surely the changed letters occur 2/3 of the way through, but the new letters at the bottom replace the old ones pretty well at the end?

Yes, it seems v. odd so I'm not 100% convinced/happy.

I have finished and made those nine changes, but 31D doesn't seem now to be a real word.
Am I missing something.
Would appreciate a hint

31 D ends up with two changes - one from altering the unclued word, one from the alteration to the diagonal. The final word is a common one.
