Does 9d begin with C? I can't quite parse it!

According to me it does. Thanks TL - I got it and then tried to change it to a season (which works with original 1d) until I read your post again and saw it didn'tchange ... so had to rethink 1d. Still stuck on 3 and 21 - and not sure about 10

I rather thought "best" as a verb was the definition - not that I can make the "top club" work.
For 8 I have a word that could mean suddenly and does convert to fit - but can't see why "even around ten" ....
I'm finding this less pleasurable and much harder work than usual geniuses ... the conversions seem quite random and one can't be sure one has the right one - they might have been made to fit into a theme to integrate the process and make it more satisfying.

For 21d, I finally decided on the "top club" part as a synonym for club with the top removed.
