Answer is 'Instant' but I can't work out why. Could anyone explain please?

Well - an second is a brief time as is instant; inst(ant) is/was used to refer to the current month in letters etc. eg the 8th inst. would refer to the 8th of March.
prox(imo) is next month; ult(imo) is last month.

I think one (legal) meaning of the word 'instant' is 'in the current month'.
