Thanks, jolan. Just the three I had earlier:

1 LIMEADE - a drink; LIE (fabrication) around MEAD (another drink)

3. PERITUS - an expert used by the RC church to argue points. Subtractive anagram "dour incompetents" - "to condemn"

5. ASWAN HIGH DAM - great engineering project; AS WAN (washed out) HIGH (bombed,as on drugs) MAD (lunatic) "retrograde" or "backwards".

Great fun, as ever, jolan.

Thanks Jolan.
1 limeade
5 Aswan High Dam
3 I had the letters for the anagram but no time to work it out.
Thanks Rosalind and Jazzy for your concern about my teeth. I still have them all and they're just about holding in there. I'm a real wimp when it comes to the dentist's chair!

Hello all - Ginge, Chrise, Rossim (glad to hear all went well), Jazzy Rosalind, Daniel 5/5 and Ari 5/5.

Had a lovely day out with Brud and wife. They've just gone back to the Emerald Isle. Lovely weather.

Although no real need, I'll append my working for those who wish to see what goes into constructing a clue. One must be able to justify everything or one loses the solver's trust. That is why I go into such detail.

Thanks a million for participating, Have a lovely week.

J.

1. fabricate = lie; a drink = mead; fabricate with a drink within = li(mead)e = LIMEADE

2. assistant = second; unemployed assistant = second to none; SECOND-TO-NONE = supreme (Chambers def).

3. subtractive anagram (not & resolved) of “dour incompetents’ – ‘to condemn’ = PERITUS = a consultant theological expert (adapted from Chambers def).

4. fold = double (double = fold – Chambers def & fold = double – Chambers Thes); in place of = acting; DOUBLE-ACTING = applying power in two directions (Chambers def)

5. as = for instance (Chambers def); washed out = wan; bombed = high (drunk), lunatic = mad and retrograde lunatic = dam; as + wan + high + dam = ASWAN HIGH DAM = great engineering project
