All the answers are surnames - no idea how many letters

1) A direction precedes a fiction
2) A direction followed by nine
3) Sounds like a white metal

Any suggestions gratefully accepted! Thank you

That's what I was thinking jazzgirl, but Smith is the answer to another one on the list - Were they called after their Granny. They wouldn't put Smith and Smyth on the same sheet would they?

Yea, Wicks is the only direction/IX combo that makes any kinda sense. Unless I'm missing an obvious one?

Both Smith and Smyth could be allowed as the second one is sometimes pronounced differently
