You wouldn't actually say "It was Chris' mistake" would you? - it wouldn't indicate the possessive. You would say "It was Chris's mistake".

Yes, I use that form of the possessive all the time - it's correct and widely used. Again, everbody else is wrong but you

I think Chris' and Les' look clumsy (although I believe they are correct).
However, James' and Charles', to me, look okay.

Sorry, I couldn't help putting my oar in. It's got me into loads of trouble in the past!
