Protest is a verb; mild or "proper" is an adjective.

Begins with a D, I think.

My last: 1d (Long unspecified period of time?). Is it Years, Yearn or other? Years seems too literal (no cryptic element?) and while to long is to yearn, I can't see the rest of any parsing.

Thanks for all other hints posted. I agree with Jazzgirl re. 5d - 'domestic channels' might have been a better clue.

Cheers - A-P

Yearn = year + N (unspecified number)

I took "unspecified" to give N (i.e. any number)

Okay, I give up! I've even tried quick solve for 10across mad hatter I allowed to enter with versatile competitor. (10) All I have is, thirteenth from q.s. or Twitterati from my brain. Neither of them seem to fit. It doesn't help that I can't see 4 down either but that'll come. HELP! I do NOT like this compiler.

I believe you give hints in this thread rather than direct answers so 10a. a 3 letter word for allowed in an anagram of "hatter I".
