Thanks both. Still cannot parse 42dn, ' Force (in Oxford?) in chase sounding alarm', (8), ?H?E?O?N; 'Shoehorn'?

My take on it, (for what it's worth!)
Shoehorn.
"Chase sounding", to chase is to shoo, giving shoe.
With horn for alarm.
Hope that makes sense!

How are you fitting 'Oxford' into that parse Rusty?

Part of the definition, Mamya?
Force in Oxford = shoehorn.

So it could say 'Force in Manchester'? - the fact that an Oxford is a shoe is not relevant?

Interesting take on it.

Is it?
For me, Manchester would not work.
Whereas Oxford is a known synonym for shoe.

I think you are at cross-purposes, rusty and mamya - I don't think you are disagreeing!

I don't think so, either, Chris.
I think it is just one of those clues where varying interpretations are possible!
