I think the *** clues are also "&lit". Any thoughts on that.

For example, 23A is a jumbled language, but the answer also ties in with "Heads of state". Again, 1D the answer can be defined as "from Liege". Similarly with the others.

Thanks, that was the only word I came up with , but I can see it now! I've given up trying to look for extra/superfluous letters, as I find clueing so awkward - glad I looked through previous comments as I don't think I would have got the theme otherwise - as it is I feel that I've been well impaled by Vlad!

Drat! I wasted this for myself as I had forgotten it was Genius day on Monday, saw the thread and foolishly read it before starting so finished it quite easily which is never satisfying. However I can't parse 12ac apart from the station itself and in 19dn does E = biting? I haven't found more than a couple of extra letters so no idea what that would have spelled. If it wouldn't spoil things, which clues have the extra letters?
