Novice, yes the final 3 letters are law. You are looking for a clue answer which when "mangled" with law makes the thing mentioned in the quotation that would end together with the victim in the sea or on the ground.
Tks for all the above hints/help - still can't twig which clue is to be mangled, gtfl a nudge. Also are all the letters of the author's surname adjacent to each other? I can't get get the fourth letter alongside the others. Many tks.

The first letter of the victim appears (in my completed grid) in two places which run on with the rest of the letters. I'm certain both letters are right - but not sure which one to use.
I noticed that- it must have not been noticed by the setter/editor. Often when either answer is valid they accept both. I think the one at the far left of the grid may have been the one that was originally intended?
