Can anyone explain how 16a works. I have the 5-letter entry so I know what the 4-letter answer is but I can't figure the word play or the definition.

Match= singles, as in tennis.
Drop the tip of 'lighted' = singes.
(Which can be the result of dropping something burning onto anything.
Then, omit the E to give your four letter grid entry.

I don't have the puzzle, so do not know the clue 5down.
Enid Blyton wrote a series of books about the Famous Five.
And in the fifties Hibernian Football Club had a forward line known as the Famous Five.
