14d and 24 ac - `Can`t have one without the other` (Frank Sinatra!)
I should know the US writer but only have ? R ? ? ?.

24a the US author is Roth. But the definition is "outrage"

Yes, a tough one this, as was last week's. 2d and 23a are words I'd never heard of. Thanks for all the hints posted so far.

Anyway, only one left to go - a hint, please, for 10d (the Papal Bull clue). I guess the first word is a common given name, but I just can't see the second.
