ee it now, but my problem was that I have been to where the penguins live, and fur seals live there too. Clue should have been penguins and polar bears perhaps.

I did wonder about that, alexandria, but I (carelessly?) assumed that the compiler had checked.

Has everybody finished? I found this one hard to get started (other than the obvious10a) but not too difficult once I'd got a few words in. 12a was my last, apart from the following - I'd forgotten about that Clegg!

Could someone please explain the parsing of 17d? The pioneer is obvious, but I can't see the Spanish connection. Is the clue ambiguous: -ene, -ine and -yne endings all give petroleum derivatives.

TIA
Andy

I've gone for the i - "pioneer in Spain", international symbol E (Espana)

Ah, the "in" is literal, and Wikipedia says "E, international licence plate coding for Spain" - I was thinking that it was ES, for some reason, so rejected that interpretation. Doh...

Thanks - and to all others who provided hints.
