31a. Set off seeing sun in catch not caught (8).
?o?t?a?t. Suspect contrast but cannot relate it to 1d. Island of bookless 31? (4) for which I have cuba.

31 contract - catch, minus c(aught) plus s(sun)?

.... = contrast

Contrast = Anagram (C + NOT + STAR)

CUBA is an obvious choice for 1D but CEBU is possible and I can't see how either relates to 31A ?

My thinking got to... Cast = catch, not is part of the word as it is caught in it, but that leaves an explanation for the 'r'. That gives contrast, which is 'set off'.
Contract could be bookless if you take off 'tract', but then how is 'con' related to either cuba or cebu?
And then how does contract come out of clue for 31a?
Maybe it's something completely different!

CUBA is correct as 31A is NT (book) + CASTRO
