Hi Peter- I didn't mean that it had a thematic word missing from the wordplay but rather that Pit is a part of the body and it is part of the solution

The preamble says that all solutions are wholly or in part thematic.

Agreed on 29a djawhufc...the plural worries me a bit, but I don't see another option.

18d I have defn as "lapidary words", record and hit (smashed) around a p.

Ell being the cloth measure leaves no other thematic option as far as I can see
