That gives me 59*67 or 61*67, but I'm at a loss as to how that leads to a 3-digit grid entry (although I seem to have 18 combinations). Other methods I've tried, using OOo Calc, leave me baffled as to the difference between the answer length and the number of lights for the grid entry.

Those are the only combinations that will give you a 4-digit answer, but a 3-digit entry for 1dn. To get the entry you start with the lower of the two primes, so 59 or 61; you then subtract the lower from the higher, so the entry for the 59/67 pair is 598, 8 being the difference between the two prime factors. The entry for the 61/67 pair is 616.
If you follow that process, you will see why eg 31/97 is not a possible pair because it leads to a 4-digit grid entry (3166).

You should also keep an eye out for odd-numbered digits in answers that cross the last digit of another entry. For instance, 22ac has 13 possible entries, but 8 of those can be eliminated because every entry must end in an even number (odd - odd = even).

Help please! I have a problem with the endings of 10A and 3d. I want them both to finish with a 4 or a 6. ie 10A to be ..4 or ..6 and 3D to be ..4 or ..6. I've checked my answers but I cannot see where I have gone wrong. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Sudoku lover. Many thanks! I hope that I am OK now and that 10A has 3 as its middle number.

After struggling with this all week I eventually realised that I had failed to copy (or read) the first paragraph of the instructions when I edited it for printing on a single page!

You are right about the middle number of 10a, but I advise caution in accepting Sudoku lover's advice that both 3d and 10a end in 6. Unless I've gone badly wrong, they don't. You should see why later in the solving process.
