You're welcome, Brendan, and actually what I said before would work in reverse

Slav = a human race = mankind =man
(check all definitions in Chambers)

what do you think?

Hi Elle, I think it's too vague. Here's the test (for me) - has anyone, in the history of mankind, ever said 'Man' when they meant Slav? I'd say the answer is an emphatic no, So, maybe it is the right answer, but it's a sad day for crosswords if it is.

maybe the ? at the end of the clue signifies a joke in the setter's mind,
Pole is a Slav - therefore is a pole (S) a ladies (lav) man ?

Good morning, Jazzgirl!
I'm afraid you've lost me here.... I can see 'pole' being a double definition, but in that case wouldn't 'man' be superfluous?
and what question mark are you referring to? Brendan didn't put one in his clue

Hi Elle
the printed clue is written as :

Pole ____ ladies' man? (4)

A ? or ! at the end of a clue usually signifies a joke or the answer is not literal.

Yes, I understand, it's just that Brendan hadn't put one!Are you saying that Pole is the definition (Pole = SLAV) as well as giving the 'S'? in this case I can't see why 'man' is necessary?
Apologies if I'm being thick here!
