Last one, any suggestions please!

1d Split alter egos' newly repaired ship (6)

?E?S?L - Vessel fits the ship part - but I can't see the rest of the clue - the only other common words that fit are TEASEL or WEASEL.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Indirect anagrams (where the fodder is not present in the clue) are generally outlawed but moving parts of a word that is not in the clue (like this one) are allowed. It's a fine line that divides them!

Yes - if you've got 7ac and 9ac it must be vessel

Actually ... rather than an anagram I can see now that its SEL VES split and newly repaired as VES SEL. So everything needed IS in the clue.

That is what Big Dave meant, methinks. I liked his use of the word Fodder.

It was a great crossword. I initially thought... Where's the preamble... where's the trick, but slowly I thought clever... very clever.

Off to do the Everyman now, thanks for the input everyone.
