Can anone offer any help on quote, the top right grid or any of 12d, 16a 33d or 34d. Ground to a halt on sat, and time has offered no inspiration.

12 down is NIT E (knight) but I can't help with the others. I'm totally stuck on 1 and 6 across, answers to which might help find the quote. This puzzle seems a brute.

1a is FLYTE - FLIGHT.

I'm nearly there. I'm missing 6a and 9d and 7d doesn't seem to make sense:

Wind instrument must be less loud to reveal string one (4)

It seems to me to be (F)LUTE but that doesn't fit with the perimeter saying as I think there should be an O in it.

Also it is misleading to say that what goes round the perimeter is a quotation. It's actually a proverb, albeit a modified one.

Hi, fellow-strugglers!
Can anyone confirm my last one, please?
38d I have HALE, but can't really see where (if it's right) the HA comes from.
Enjoyed the idea nevertheless!
