Many thanks as always, Jolan, for a challenging set of clues.
Here is my stab at them.

1. Over repaired? It doesn’t start! (5)- ENDED?
Mended – repaired, doesn’t start , gives “ended”- over?

2. Heath and fen birds die quickly with bad hearts (5)- ERICA?
The hearts of the words “fEn biRds dIe quiCkly” and “bAd” give the letters of erica, a heath?

3. War paint for a watchdog? (9) - EYESHADOW?
Eye – “watch” and shadow “dog”. War paint is make up, as is eye shadow.

4. Attend dance outside hospital unit (9) CHAPERONE?
Caper – dance, outside H for hospital and one – unit gives “chaperone” – to attend.

5. Gun dog, in shirt, prepared for going on stage, perhaps (6,7)- RIDING SHOTGUN?
Anagram of “Gun dog, in shirt”. People who "rode shotgun" went on stage coaches.
Thanks again.

Hi jolan;
Just the two to offer:

2. Erica (heath) middle letters(hearts) of fEn biRds dIe quiCkly + bAd

5. Riding shotgun (on a stage coach perhaps) (anagram = hound dog in shirt)

Not a lot of time to try harder this afternoon, but
enjoyable as always. Thanks
Jg

Thanks Jolan.
Only #1 and #5 today. I did not have much time and wasted a fair amount of it looking for a subtractive!

Just back home. Gosh! What a great attendance today. Thank you Chris, ginge, Ari, Jg, fieryjack, leapy (well done), Therogue, Rossim, RE and ab.

Ari and ab = 5/5. Both parsings spot on. No need for me to post my own (they look very like ab's) Glad you enjoyed them. See you next week.

Thanks for participating
John.

They did wear eyeshadow in TV Westerns. See Barbara Stanwyck in The Big Valley- hilarious.
